There's beer involved, surprisingly
I found myself in a culinary quandary this evening for dinner, as Hanne had to eat quickly before Dragon Boat practice, and the three closest take-out places that I frequent were all off the menu: Hanne and I got sandwiches at the grocery store so that was out, I had Greek food for lunch today so that was out, and I’m having Thai food for lunch tomorrow so that was out. I decided to head over to Barley Mile for “old time’s sake” (which isn’t really true since I still go there, just not as often), but as I crossed Belmont I thought better and came to the Green Dragon instead. After all, I have to get my money’s worth, you know? My 40-ish-odd ounce mug just gathers dust when beer isn’t flowing from it.
The Green Dragon recently changed hands and the menu was given an overhaul, so I’m looking forward to trying the new fares. The old owner is staying on as the “beer consultant” and the brewer-to-be is remaining as the, well, brewer-to-be, but I’m hoping the place gets a minor facelift as well.
Back to something dinner-related, though. On Hanne’s urging, I tried a Greek food cart that’s just a few blocks from my work today. I’ve been frequenting the food carts a few times a week minimum these days, partially because it’s cheaper than any other place, mostly because it’s just plain better. I’ve had food from two different Thai carts, two different Indian carts, the afore-mentioned Greek cart, and a place that serves soup and wraps. The gyro I had for lunch today was so good, I’d step over my own mother just to get another one. I noticed a Thai cart I’d never seen before next to it, too, so tomorrow I’ll go and try something noodley, like Pad Thai or something spicy. The current noodle champion (well, spicy noodles) is still the place a few blocks from my apartment, but I’m always on the lookout for something spicy and good for you. Well, goodish.
Work’s been going well. We’re about ready to wrap up several projects and embark on a few others, and I think I might have managed to convince my boss to combine a couple of our projects into one undertaking, which raises the complications that can arise, but it’ll work out better in the end. My end goal is to reduce the number of servers we have, and with this new project I’m happy to report that while we’ll pick up another server, we’ll get rid of three that we currently have that desperately need to be retired. A net loss of two servers would be great. Another one could be retired if we moved a piece of software off it and onto another server. If this project works out, I can see us retiring several more servers next year with just he purchase of one additional server. My end goal is to get us down to single digits in hardware, and I think it’s doable within a year or so, pending other things that may come up, of course.
I’ve been doing a lot of work on my website gallery, which was sorely lacking the attention it deserved. I’ve manged to throw about five or six new albums on it of pictures I’d been slacking off updating, and I think it’s looking pretty good. I still need to move over all my college pictures, my cross-country trip pictures, and a couple of other miscellaneous things, but it’s about 85% complete. You can find it at http://gallery.technodevil.com, and it stretches back to…well, 2002 or so now, but it’ll go back to 1999 when it’s done.
Not sure what else to mention. It’s 6:25 PM and I’ drinking good beer, so I might just leave it there.
Resolution and a thundering BBQ
The day after I sent my email to everyone I could find regarding the Best Brews internship, I got a call back from someone who gave me an apology, but it didn’t seem like she’d actually read the email I sent out and seemed to think I just had some sour grapes about not being chosen, and not that I’d been told I was chosen in the first place. I tried to explain things the best I could, but at that point it didn’t really matter. The next day, I got a FedEx package with three $10 Amex gift cheques, a handwritten apology, and an odd tote bag with Bliss shaving cream and aftershave in it. Thus ended my experience with Sheraton and Starwood. No, not quite–I used the shaving cream and aftershave, and while they both smell very good, the shaving cream really sucked and I probably won’t use it again. Thus ended my experience with Sheraton and Starwood.
Last Saturday was the family version of the housewarming BBQ, and it went over really well despite the looming clouds. The forecast had called for thunder and rain, but it was nice all afternoon and despite my panicking the day before about rain and not being able to fit everyone in our apartment, the day went off without a hitch. We made some very potent sangria, had homebrew available, and grilled up beef and veggie kabobs, corn, bratwursts with a beer and mustard marinade, polenta with sliced mozarella, and pineapple for dessert. We also had pita and hummus, Hanne’s cous-cous salad, and fresh salsa I made that morning, so people had plenty to eat and drink. Definitely plenty to drink, no question about that.
After everyone had left and Hanne and I were cleaning up, the rain started to fall so I ran out to cover the grill, and then not long after that the thunder and lightning started. Hanne poo-poo’d the wimpy storm, but I had to remind her that we weren’t in the midwest and that was about as bad as it got in Portland. Still, we sat out on the front porch and listened to the rain and thunder and watched the lightning, and it was a good end to the day.
Actually, let me back up. The entire Memorial Day Weekend was good, start to finish. Friday evening Hanne and I went to the Zinfandel tasting at our local wine shop and then ventured up to Noble Rot for some more wine along with some cheese and olives. Then we wandered down to the Jade Lounge and had cocktails and a salad roll. That was a nice evening. On Sunday the day after our BBQ, both Hanne and I were a tad hungover, so we pretty much just lazed around all day: Hanne on her computer watching streaming TV and I on my computer playing games. We didn’t do anything together all day until we both started wondering what to do for dinner and drove to the store to get some things to help finish up a few leftovers from the BBQ.
Monday we drove out to my Mom’s house to help her move some things to her new house, got the grand tour, and concluded our day with dinner at a local cafe, bottling a batch of wheat beer, and then falling asleep to the sound of rain again. I crossed a bunch of things off my mental to-do list (fixing Heather’s laptop, checking out Wickes Furniture’s going-out-of-business sale, bottling one batch of beer and racking the other), ate a lot of good food, sat outside and listened to thunder, and even went for a run. Yes, this was a very good weekend.
I’ve also moved all my pictures to the new gallery software I’m using, and most (but not all, quite yet) of my pictures can be found at http://gallery.technodevil.com. Someday I need to go through my blog and fix all the links to point to the correct albums, but with nearly 600 entries, I gotta say, I don’t see that happening in the near future. But for what’s it’s worth, most of them are there now.
Naturally, if I ever switch again, I’ll have to come back and fix this entry, too.

I got oh-so-screwed.
So, I’ve been screwed.
I’ve been writing about how I was one of the finalists for the Best Brews Summer Intern position and how I was going to fly to New York to interview with the Chief Beer Officer as well as the Sheraton executives, and I’ve been waiting patiently for my phone to ring with details. I even called them five days after receiving the phone call and asked for some details since, well, it had been five days and I still hadn’t heard anything, and the PR person I’d been incontact with said she’d have to call me back. That was May 7th. It’s been two and a half weeks, and I hadn’t heard anything. I got a UPS envelope delivered last week with a copy of my background check, so I figured things were just moving slowly.
Imagine my surprise, then, when Hanne discovered that the Best Brews Intern website (which I will not link to from this blog) was updated with the four finalists. Four people, none of whom are me. Wait, what? Wasn’t I explicitly told I was one of the finalists? Wasn’t I outright asked “What are your plans next week?” when first called to tell me I was one of the finalists?
I have been taught to be as professional as possible when dealing with others, and something like this smacks of amateur hour. Or just corporate bullshit. Not even a fucking phone call to say “Well, we decided to go with another candidate, but thank you for your video submission” or “I’m truly sorry, but there’s been a horrible mixup.” Not a peep. I found out second-hand. I would have found out for myself when I checked the website the next day, but the fact that I didn’t get a phone call, email, or letter telling me as such (and I know they have all three of those since they’ve used two of them twice apiece) reeks of the worst kind of shenanagins.
Just in case they didn’t know what my email was, I made sure that they got it last night, too, and I sent this email to the PR person I’d been dealing with, the Chief Beer Officer, and every executive who sounded like they might have anything to do with this project.
Dear Sirs,
This letter feels extremely unprofessional as I write it, but I would like a moment to express my displeasure with a situation I have been involved with regarding your corporation.
I was one of the many applicants for the Best Brews Summer Intern position and one of the 20 finalists chosen from the thousands of submissions. I spent most of the week following that news producing a 5-minute video and overnighting it to [name removed] so that I could share my love for beer–at my own expense, I might add, since a mailing label was mistakenly not included with my packet and the instructions I was given were not sufficient since I was not given billing information for Starwood’s FedEx account. I received a call two and a half weeks ago from [name removed] informing me that I was one of the four finalists and that you would like to fly me out to New York in order to be interviewed for the Best Brews intern position, and I was directly asked, what was I doing the next week? Would I have the time to fly to New York and meet with the executives and [name removed], the Chief Beer Officer? That was on May 2nd. [name removed] told me that she would get back to me with some specific details of plans. When I hadn’t heard from anyone by May 7th, I called [name removed] in order to confirm that plans were still in place to fly me to New York, and after I reached her she told me she would have to call me back. It is now May 19th as I write this, and I never heard back from her or any other representatives from Starwood after that phone call on May 7th.
It was brought to my attention tonight that the Best Brews Intern website was updated with the final four applicants, and you will have to imagine my surprise and disappointment that I am not among them. After being contacted by [name removed] and informed that I was not only one of the finalists, but one of the final four, you can imagine my surprise at the discovery that the final four faces do not include my own. Just last week I received a UPS envelope containing a copy of the clean background check that was performed on me, and while I did not take this to be a guarantee of anything, I believe it showed that there was still interest in me for the Best Brews Intern position and it renewed hope that things were just moving slowly.
I feel that I must be blunt: I find the lack of professionalism I have encountered so far to be appalling both as an applicant for the position as well as a consumer. A simple phone call telling me that while my submission was appreciated, the company was going to proceed with a different candidate would have sufficed, but since I had also already been informed that I was supposed to be included with the four candidates that can be found right now at the URL at [I'm so not linking to the website] I obviously felt I was beyond that point. Was there a mixup somewhere? Why was I not informed of this change after almost three weeks of waiting? I am disappointed that I did not get an opportunity to talk in person with [name removed] and the other Starwood executives about my passion for beer, yes, but after being explicitly told that I was a finalist for this position and then finding out second-hand from someone else that I was not included with the finalists was a bit of a shock to me, so I hope you will pardon my vocal displeasure of the process. In particular, the lack of communication from your end that could have avoided this mildly angry correspondence would have gone a long way in allaying the disappointment and annoyance I feel right now.
As one final note, I was assured by [name removed] (and also in the letter I received as one of the final 20) that the cost of overnighting my video submission to you would be paid for by Starwood, and I would like to request the $30.66 in FedEx postage I spent for the video I produced for you to be returned to me. I was going to write it off as money well-spent in pursuing what might have been the beginnings of a very interesting position, but the lack of any kind of communication from your company have convinced me that I would like my postage money refunded. I was assured that Starwood would pay for the postage both over the phone and in writing, and I would like to exercise that assurance.
I hope that the individual who is selected to be your Best Brews Summer Intern serves you well and that they have a memorable summer, but please understand that due to the circumstances I have outlined above, I will most likely not be voting for any of the candidates. Thank you very much.
I don’t know if I got the executive and Chief Beer Officer’s email addresses right, but I used the same format that the PR person’s email was in (firstname.lastname). I haven’t gotten any bouncebacks, at least, so I can only presume that my email was received and someone has seen it, but frankly, given my experience thus far I’m not hopefully that I’ll ever hear back from them.
Ideally, what would my desired outcome of this be? I thought a lot about that last night as I lay awake in bed most of the night (for the second night in a row, I might add, but for unrelated reasons the previous night) and I think my ideal outcome would be my $30.66 back and an apology from someone of consequence (as in, not the PR person who never called me back) where they admit that either there was a collosal screwup somewhere or they acted completely unprofessionally. I don’t want this job now. I mean, I do want the job, but I wouldn’t want it under the circumstances that have transpired even if they offered it to me or offered to put me in the finalists after all. For starters, there are four people with their faces on the website with friends and families who want them to get the job, and I could never bump them out of the running even if it were offered. Secondly, I don’t think this is a company I want to work for/with at the moment. I understand about screwups (I’ve made a few of them myself, after all), but this is just something else.
So I’m both upset and embarrassed. I’m upset that a job I worked very hard to get didn’t give me the courtesy that I was due, especially since they had told me that I was in the finalists for it. I’m embarrassed that I’ve gone around for the last two and a half weeks telling my friends and family I was in the running for this job when apparently I wasn’t. I stood in front of the Oregon Brew Crew and told 75 Portland homebrewers I was in the running for this position. I told my friends in the industry. I told a friend in the media. I stood in front of a dozen of my friends and family last weekend at my BBQ and I told the story of how I was in the final four candidates and how they wanted to fly me to New York to interview.
If the embarrassment I feel at having to admit to them that not only did I not get the job but there’s a chance I was never going to get it in the first place can be offset by anything, it’s that I can go back to all my friends and family and my contacts in the industry and my friend in the media and 75 Portland homebrewers and tell them the story of how Starwood Hotels and Four Points by Sheraton screwed me over and treated me extremely unprofessionally. I look forward to telling people of the amateurism I had to deal with.
And I look forward to the apology I deserve but likely won’t receive.
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood
It was 80-something on Thursday, 90-something on Friday, and somewhere in between yesterday. The calendar may not reflect it yet, but summer has officially arrived here at casa de Andrew. The windows are open, Hanne and I are sitting outside (thanks, wireless and laptop), and I’m listening to alternating sounds of a woodpecker and news helicopters buzzing the waterfront for Barrack Obama’s speech going on right now. Hanne was hoping that since Oregon’s primary matters for the first time since…well, potentially ever, we should ry to hear either candidate speak if we had an opportunity. We had a lot of cleaning to do today, though, and it was pretty warm and we didn’t want to spend the late morning and afternoon standing in line, even if it was for a potentially historic opportunity.
Heh. I can actually hear him, from 17 blocks and a river’s width away. I can’t make out words, but I can hear his voice. How cool is that?
Last night Hanne and I did our first entertaining here at the new place with a bunch of people over for BBQ and homebrew. We asked people to bring their own meat or whatever they wanted to toss on the grill, but we had pasta salad, beef and veggie kabobs, grilled corn, grilled pineapple, and a few other things to go around. It went so well with the grill I acquired from my Mother that Hanne and I sat out back all morning looking for delicious grill recipes from my back issues of Bon Appetit magazine. We got a bunch of great ideas. Our plan is to fire it up a few times a week and cook more than enough food so that we’ll have leftovers. I made a steak for myself last night, but I didn’t finish the whole thing, so today I sliced what was left, tossed it on a bun with some grilled onions and peppers along with some cheese, and I had myself a cold Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It wasn’t quite as good as I hoped it would be. You know what would have made it better? Grilling it. Hanne would let me, though: we’re saving the grill for tomorrow night or so.
We’re having my family over next weekend, so we’ll probably have a repeat if the kabobs and I hope the pineapple, but we’ll do a few other things, too. I’m thinking I’d like to try a marinade I read about that uses beer and stone ground mustard, good for brats and sausages. I thought I’d throw some thin slices of garlic into them before I toss them in the marinade to see how that comes out. I also want to do some grilled polenta, whip up some sangria, and maybe grill some potatoes, too. It’s going to be great! Assuming the weather is as nice next weekend as it was this weekend, of course.
Hanne mentioned this morning that she liked our apartment before, but with the grill and our backyard area, now she loves it. I have to concur with her: it’s pretty incredible that we have this space at our disposal. I walked around and sprayed some homemade weed killer on the dandilions and other assorted weeds on the back patio,so hopefully they will have been cleared up by next weekend so the place looks a little better out here.
Still no word from Sheraton about my trip to New York, but I did get a copy of the background check they performed on me. Yay! No felonies or misdomeanors.
Tonight, aside from the usual Sunday evening laundry that occupies my time, Hanne and I will be sitting out here in the back and drinking white wine that the boyfriend of one of our upstairs neighbors brought us last night when he stopped by to have a kabob and some homebrew. No grilling, but we have plenty of leftovers to eat. I think that’s just about a perfect plan.
