A long weekend
February 19, 2008
I don’t know what the hell I did to my shoulder yesterday, but it’s killing me. Hanne and I bought a vertical corner shower caddy when we first moved into the new apartment, but it needed to be trimmed a little bit to fit in our shower. So Hanne trimmed a bit off using a hacksaw, and while she was at classes yesterday I wedged it into the corner, somehow managing to pull/strain/break something in my shoulder in the process. It was sore yesterday, and I found that putting any weight or strain on it produces a fair amount of pain. Solution? Don’t put weight or strain on it. Sounds easy enough, but I use my left shoulder more often than I thought.
This past weekend was somewhat of a mixed bag. Friday evening was fun as Hanne and I went to a wine tasting and then retreated back to our apartment to drink some more wine and play some Scrabble. Well, I played, she cheated. At least, I can only assume she beat me. When Hanne and I play, I always pull ahead in the beginning by putting down a number of medium-length words with higher point values, but every time–every single time!–Hanne and I play, Hanne surges ahead towards the end with a well-placed high point value word, and then goes back to the “everyday” words. Friday night’s winning word was “perky” on a triple something point block, plus a double something point block. Aarg. Of course, it never really helps that we’re both drinking beer or wine when we typically play, but I stand by my calling her on several words that turned out to not be words at all.
Saturday was an odd day. We met my Dad and sister at the Hillsdale McMenamins for lunch and their annual “Battle for the Belt” brewfest, where the McMenamins brewers all submit special beers to be sampled. Attendees vote on their favorite three beers, and the overall winning beer goes to the Oregon Brewer’s Festival in July. Now, I’ve been to the Hillsdale Brewfest before, but this was a first for Hanne, Heather, and my Dad. The result? Hanne and I were pretty much beyond buzzed by 1 PM, my Dad and sister had to wait a bit before climbing in their cars to go home. That’s what happens when you sample 20 three or so ounce samples one after another. We had some good beer, that was for sure, and my Dad and I actually voted for identical top three beers independently. That was…odd.
After that, I went home and napped for a couple of hours. Partially because I was sleepy from the beer, partially because I knew I’d be up late and wanted some extra sleep. I’d scheduled time from midnight to 2 AM to do some server maintenance at work, so when I got up a little before midnight to start working remotely, I was a little surprised when I got booted out of our server that handles remote connections, which meant I couldn’t do any more work. I thought I could perhaps put it off until the morning, but if I couldn’t get in, that meant no one could get in. So I saddled up and took the bus into work. Nothing like going into work at 12:30 AM on a Sunday morning, eh? I actually got my work done more quickly than if I’d done it at home, and I managed to catch the last bus to my neighborhood out of downtown Portland, so that saved me a long walk or cab fare.
But hey, I was wide awake when I got home, and I didn’t actually go back to sleep until a bout 4:30 AM. Sunday was a long day. But I had Monday off of work to recuperate, so there’s always that.
