To say that Hanne and I went apartment hunting today would be a slight misnomer, but we did look at two apartments together, but I think it was more of a showing than anything else. You see, while Hanne and I have discussed moving in together at times in the past, we hadn’t really gotten serious about actually looking for a place until recently. I want to live with Hanne, but not enough to just move into the first place that comes along or have her move in with me. I like my apartment and I sure wouldn’t mind a break in the rent, but if Hanne’s going to be a full-fledged lawyer in just over a year…well, even if we combine our rent costs now we can get a pretty nice place. That would certainly be better than sharing my current apartment, which needs a fair amount of work.
The first place we looked at was, somewhat poetically, an apartment on SE 20th not five blocks from where I live now that we’ve both watched be renovated over the last six months and that Hanne has admired as the work was done when we walked past on occasion. She actually dubbed it her “dream apartment.” Well what does she find listed on Craigslist just last night? Her dream apartment. It’s only a one-bedroom, but it’s large, bright, and open, and it has a lot of desirable features.
The second apartment we looked at was actually just next door and owned by the same landlord (or managed by the same landlord, at least) that we’d seen on Craigslist before, but even though it was pretty much everything we were looking for, it was lacking laundry facilities.
And both are adjacent to Lone Fir Cemetary, so I have to be even more vigilant for zombie attacks. And vampires. And whatever else hangs out after dark in the cemetary.
So, we have a pickle on our hands. Two bedrooms with no laundry (although he said he was going to put some in once he got a smaller car in the garage there), a deck, and an electric range? Or one bedorom with laundry, a built-in microwave, gas range, and eco-friendly building? Decisions, decisions.
Hanne wants to make a pro and con list, and while I see the logic in that, I think in the end we’ll have to go with our guts. My gut is telling me to drink more beer, though, so I’m not entirely certain what that means.
I bought some additional running stuff yesterday, mostly just things to keep me warm when running outdoors this winter. A jacket, long pants, and light gloves were exactly what I needed, and though they largely kept me warm when I ran the bridge loop yesterday after work, that winter wind whipping along the Willamette riverfront was frickin’ cold. Not even slave-made Nike apparel can keep that cold out. I made it home OK, but I think my face went numb for awhile. I hope I wasn’t drooling all over as I ran.
I’m drinking a “Sledgehammer” here at Barley Mill–that’s a double Hammerhead–and I think it’s going right to my head. Best stop there.
