Wednesday trains of thought
May 23, 2007
If I keep up my current level of running, I should be back to “normal” in no time. I ran 3.5 miles on Saturday and Sunday, 4.5 miles on Tuesday, and another 4 miles today. I sure need it, too. I’ve been neglecting the level of exercise my food and libation desires were used to six months ago, and without the same amount of running my body finally caught up with what I eat.
On the other hand, I don’t really care all that much. I’ve only really fluctuated about 5 pounds from where I’d like to be, though it feels like five pounds out and not into muscle. I’m feeling a bit rounder about the middle than I usually do, and I know full well it’s due mostly because of my love of beer. Probably going to get worse before it gets better, which I’ll just have to find out in time.
Of course, I say that as I sit here drinking something, that while 100% fat free according to labs, ends up as fat in the end if it’s not burned quickly enough. I did run for about 3.5 miles today, that oughta help a little bit. Maybe my body will metabolize it more quickly.
I’m really looking forward to this weekend. Not only is it a three-day weekend to give me a little time off from work, but I’m going to make it a doozy of a weekend to boot. Friday night–weather permitting, of course–Hanne and I are going to wander up the street to the Goodfoot Lounge and ry and snag one of their tables outside. The Goodfoot is a pretty cool bar–good food, strong drinks, all local and/or organic beer–but what always kills me is the smoking. Odd rules about smoking, too. When I went there for the first time for Erika’s going-away party, I had my Cuban cigar to smoke, and they wouldn’t let me smoke it inside. Wait…cigarette smoking is OK, but not cigars? I just don’t understand that mentality. So I smoked it outside.
In any case, it’s a pretty cool place, and I’ve had a hankering for this grilled turkey sandwich on their menu. And you know, beer…always good.
Saturday I have some plans during the day to do something I’ve been meaning to do for awhile, and then Saturday night is pretty much wide open. A bar relatively close to me that makes drinks all with freshly-squeezed juices Ive been to a few times is now under new management, and I might go check it out. Good drinks, decent prices, nice atmosphere, bad service, crappy food. Hope they worked on those last two items. It’s worth a look-see, at least. Probably hang out there for awhile, have a few drinks, maybe call a friend or two to join us, then watch a movie or a few episodes of “Buffy” that Hanne and I have been chewing through at a pretty steady pace.
Sunday is the big day. The first beef cubelets of 2007! I convinced my Dad to have a cubeies day this weekend since it’s a holiday weekend, I’ve been dying to have Hanne eat them, and since it’s part of the whole beef cubelet experience, I’ve been meaning to go to John’s Marketplace and buy some beer, anyway. Way to kill several birds with one honkin’ holiday rock. I might stop by the house of one of the partners, too, since she lives on the way and she needs some troubleshooting with the wireless on her laptop and I can’t do that at work.
Plus, you know, clocking in on a Sunday. I can add to the overtime I’ve already racked up for this pay period.
I have no plans on Monday. Although, both 300 and Grindhouse are playing at the Laurelhurst, maybe I’ll try and convince Hanne do do a double (technically, a triple) matinée feature since I have the day off! All the beer and pizza I can eat, too! Well, I still have to pay for it, naturally.
I’m still trying to catch up on my back issues of The Economist, but I’m getting very close. Right now, I’m only three and a half issues behind, though I did manage to knock out this week’s issue last night when I read all evening instead of turning on the TV. But I gotta say, that newspaper goes a lot more quickly when I skim or entirely skip the articles about sub-prime mortgage rates and the special section on international banking. Oy vey those stories are dull. I much prefer their editorials (which I never thought I’d hear myself say–I’ve always despised editorials) and news pieces.
One story that I’ll be interested to continue to follow is the new French President. I wasn’t terribly surprised when he was elected (I was mostly just glad that Le Pen got a well-deserved smackdown in the polls), but I was surprised at some of his remarks afterwards and some of his appointments. The co-founder of Doctors Without Borders? Good choice. France has so many odd problems when compared to the US, I’m interested to see if some of them are too deep-seated for politics to solve without a significant social shift (I almost wrote “social shaft,” which would have made sense in its own way, too) or if they just needed the right approach by the right President.
Come to think of it, I wonder if the same thing is true in this country. I guess I have to wait at least a year to find out if that’s the case in France, perhaps two and a half years to see if that’s the case here.
My mind is wandering too much. Guess that’s my cue to do something else.
