I’ve been jogging two or three times a week for the last, oh, maybe four or five months? Something like that. I jogged a bit in the winter, but it’s only been since March or so that I’ve really been following a real routine. I’ve gradually been pushing myself further and further, faster and faster, and I finally decided that I would time myself today, mostly as an exercise to find out if I’m faster or slower than I was last year when I did the Race for the Cure. I finished with a time of 24:29 last year, placing 206th among all the men and 34th in my age group, meaning I had a time of around 8 minutes/mile. Tonight, I did 4.5 miles in about 30:41 (that’s subtracting some time for waiting at a few cross streets), so my speed has increased markedly. Not bad, really.
Speaking of Race for the Cure, I’d like to whore myself out for a moment. I signed up today to run the Race again, and I’m soliciting donations on my behalf. I set a relatively low donation amount mostly because I didn’t know how much support I could muster up between my family and my work, but if any of my readers would be willing to throw a few dollars my way and sponsor my run, you can donate at my race page at the Race for the Cure website . My main goal is to finish this year with a time at least one minute less than last year, but if I can keep the same pace I did today, I could finish with a time of…let’s see…carry the 1… well, less than 24:29. I’m fortunate that no one in my family has been affected my breast cancer, but I’d to do my part to raise awareness for the issue and get some exercise at the same time.
In any case, there’s no minimum donation to my knowledge, and even the smallest amount would be helpful in both helping meet my goal as well as contribute to the cause. Thanks.
Of course, after this part weekend I can use all the exercise I can get. Beer is fat free, but it’s not exactly calorie free. This past weekend was the annual Oregon Microbrewer’s Festival, and I made good use of my Friday evening at the brewfest with my Dad, then I stuck around and had a few beers and dinner with a couple of my coworkers. I gotta say, though, last year was better. More interesting beers, mostly. My favorite Oregon breweries were pretty much bringing stuff I’d had before, which is really disappointing. The brewfest is supposed to be a time to play around with recipes and do something interesting, not bring a bunch of kegs of something that you’re already bottling and selling.
That’s right Bridgeport and Deschutes, I’m talking to you. Get with the program already.
This past weekend also marked the first upgrade of my computer (save for a bigger hard drive I popped in a couple of weeks ago) in close to a year and a half–though I did have a minor downgrade last fall. I managed to somehow destroy my CPU, and I could only afford the next model down, so I’ve been running with a slower CPU since then. Now mind you, I haven’t noticed a real difference, but it’s the principle of it, you know? AMD dropped their prices substantially since Intel came out with the Next Best Thing (TM), so I went from a 2.0 GHz processor to a processor with two 2.4 Ghz cores in it, effectively meaning I doubled my processing power for less than I had budgeted for. Rock on! But enough of the geek talk, except that I now have a faster computer than my Dad again. Ha ha!
Recently I’ve been playing through a game that I’ve been trying to finish for about two years now, and after finishing it on Sunday I’ve decided that I’m going to make it my mission to now finish Half Life 2. I’ve been trying to finish that for a year, having constantly losing my saved games in either a catastrophic system failure or forgetting to back them up when I format. Well now that I’m running pretty smoothly, I plan on finishing this game that’s been languishing on my computer for a year.
I got paid this weekend, which was a real boon since I was effectively broke. I don’t exactly lead a garish lifestyle, but since my last paycheck was from a short pay period, I nearly ran out of money. I mean I have savings…but I’d prefer not to dip into that. This was my first paycheck with my raise on it, and I was happy to see the amount that came through, especially the 2.something hours of overtime. Man, that really adds up. I gotta get me some more of that overtime pay. Of course, with some extra money coming in, I’ll have to figure out a way to spend it….
Things are going pretty well, though. Computer upgrades make Andrew happy, and I’ll probably grab a new video card sometime in the near future, too. Good jogging times make Andrew happy, as does a wide selection of beer at his fingertips. The pilot light on my hot water heater going out on Sunday didn’t make me happy, but I can’t win all the time. Maybe a cold shower did me some good, who knows? Oh, it blew chunks, who am I kidding?
Please consider donating a few dollars if you can spare it. I’d appreciate the support, and I know it’s for a good cause. Have a good week.
