My jitters seem to have been entirely dependent on my perception of my knowledge at my new job, and as the week went on I realized that most of what I have to learn involves experience with particular pieces of software, and not a fundamental lack of knowledge. Sure, I may not know how to run the tape backup of the massive storage array, but I’ve never used the software and it’s not yet my responsibility. I’m sure if it becomes my responsibility, I’ll get to know it pretty fast.
But other than that I’m settling in well. On Wednesday I helped to solve a problem that had been around for close to two years, and while it wasn’t a critical one (otherwise they wouldn’t have let it be for two years) it was annoying enough to me to bring it up. I spent a few hours researching the problem, pointed out what they could do to solve it, and it got fixed. Good impression on my first day. Tomorrow I’m going to return to work and continue to try and solve a printing problem that I was unsuccessful in solving on Friday. It’s not a big problem, but I know of at least two people in the firm that have it, so I’m putting in some time now and then.
Things are going pretty well, aside from the expect maladies with the situation with Erika, but I’m sure that I’ll adjust soon enough. I heard from her last night and this afternoon, and she’s currently in Moab with the rest of her training group. She’ll be on the road for another two weeks, so I probably won’t hear from her much in that time given her remote locations.
I had dinner with my Mom on Saturday night and dinner at my Dad’s house tonight, so I certainly got my fair share of people willing to listen to me complain about things if I chose to, which I think was the intended goal aside from seeing me in general. I’ve been getting a lot of the sympathetic head-tilts lately that go along with the “How are you doing?” question. Yes, I know I just stole that line from “Friends,” but it’s pretty applicable. Plus I got free meals, which is always good no matter how much money you’re making. In my case, this is one of my last lean pay periods, as when I mail off my rent check on the 1st of the month I will be out of debt with my landlord and can use the money I’d been adding on to my monthly rent for day-to-day living expenses. It’s not a huge difference, but there have just been too many paychecks where I’m down in double digits too low for my tastes.
I just wanted to say that I’m OK, and that things are going much better than they were a week ago at this time.
