Not so quiet anymore, eh?

I apologize for my silence over the last two weeks, but it’s largely been out of my control. About every other day my website lost access at my Mom’s house where it was residing, either a combination of Comcast’s chicanery, the router being flaky, or some other things that I couldn’t identify from a distance. Besides, as far as I’m concerned, I *did* write. I wrote last Tuesday, but I just happened to accidently erase it all adn I was less than thrilled about rewriting the lot of it. So hey, if you didn’t get to read what I wrote, that’s YOUR problem!

It’s been a pretty slow couple of weeks, really. My Dad wanted to go hiking the weekend after Memorial Day, same starting point as our Memorial Day hike, but it was 25% shorter and gained about 200% more elevation than the other trail. He sounded excited to do it, I wanted to do it, but I just wasn’t in the mood to go, but he was going with or without me. He got rained out, so I didn’t miss a thing. As I was jogging that weekend, I realized that I was jogging usually about three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) for longer than I was last summer, but that I was in better shape almost a year ago than I am now. So as I puffed away on the treadmill, I decided that instead of jogging every other day for three miles, I’d return to my jogging roots and go for two miles every day. Just a slightly longer distance, but more constant exercise. That, of course, presented a problem: when to actually exercise? We’re talking at least a 30 minute commitment for daily exercises, plus a shower to clean up, and since I have to pay for laundry that means I’m going through clothes twice as fast. The only solution I could come up with was to do it in the mornings before I normally get up, so as of last Tuesday I’m now rising at 5:15 AM instead of 6 AM. It sure makes for interesting mornings, that’s for certain. And interesting evenings since I’m usually beat around 9:30 PM and I turn in around 10 PM without fail. And to think, I used to (and still do) tease the people in my family about going to bed so early! I was staying up until midnight on a nightly basis as recently as two months ago, but having to be at work around 7 AM really changes things. If I were on a more normal 9-5 shift, I’d be able to go to sleep later (and get up later, probably around 7:15), but I like the shift I have.

I also went to go see the new Harry Potter movie in the last two weeks…twice. Once with my sister, and once with my Dad, who I’ve made a point of seeing the previous two with, as well. After all, he needs exposure to pop culture from time to time. He did find it amusing, however, that with the exception of Mystic River, all the movies he’s seen in the theaters this past year (and probably for the rest of the year) are escapism films, which is about the furthest thing from his reading habits. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and soon I’ll drag him to see Spider-Man 2, as well, since that’s coming out in two weeks. If you haven’t seen the new Harry Potter film yet, it’s marvelous. My favorite one so far, though I did enjoy the book the most of any so far, as well. The new director really added some neat things to the movie that made Hogwarts look a little more how I pictured it in my mind.

My sister was gone in California this past weekend, so I had the place to myself. Apparently having the place to myself is a synonym for sitting around being bored looking for something to do. My Dad decided he wanted to give the hike another shot, though, but he wanted to go on Saturday, instead. A week of getting up at 5:15 AM daily, however, meant that I needed a chance to sleep in, and since I knew I was going to stay up late with my friend Michiko as she passed through town for the evening, I had to decline. As it turned out, it was good that I did. The trail turned out to be unmaintained, extremely steep in places, and as my Dad discovered the hard way, a bad place to take a dog. He got out of there about three hours later than he expected, having planned for a six hour hike but taking nine in the end. He was pretty tired at the end of the day, having to get both himself and Maddie up and down the trail. Well, there are plenty of other trails to try….

Work is going just fine. Tomorrow’s payday, as a matter of fact. I made half my first rent and student loan payments, plus my first car payment, and come tomorrow I’ll have no more planned expenses for the month of June so I can liquidate my bank account on computer stuff, DVDs, and beer. Ha! Just seeing if you were paying attention. Actually I like getting paid every two weeks because it seems to make things go faster. Work itself, of course, is keeping me fairly busy, and I haven’t had as much time to write on my website while at work even if I could have accessed my site more than once a week. Never fear about that, though, because yesterday I went and retrieved my web server from my Mom’s house and set it up at the apartment. In addition to the connection problems my Mom was having, it seemed that the machine also had a bad network card in it, so I had to swap that out before I took it home. It seems to be doing fine in its new home, though.

Well that’s about all I can think of. On a closing note, I’d like to addresss someone who’s been reading my site for awhile but who I’ve never acknowledged: go Amanda! Having read your last LiveJournal entry, I do wish that my life had more unexpected bounties like you found.

I had a lot more to say in the previous entry that didn’t get posted, but hey, that’s lost into the ether now. I’m getting up again tomorrow morning at 5:15 AM, so I have about another nine hours of coherent time today. Until next time, which I promise will be sooner than the last.
