Second day thoughts.
May 4, 2004
I’m on my lunch break from my new job right now–second day. I have a full 30 minutes left on lunch, so I have plenty of time to write. The last could of days have been a bit overwhealming, if you can believe that. Granted, new job, lots of absorb, you’d think that would be the extent of it, but it’s not just that. There’s a lot swimming around inside my head. Mostly about my future in general, much of which I’m not sure I can really express too well at the moment, but I think you understand nonetheless.
Anyhow, it’s my second day. My first day was spent filling out forms as most first days are, but then I got tossed a lot of product information to try and figure out as quickly as I could, and so for the last day and a half (work days, that is) I’ve been experimenting with the software we produce and support, trying to get the hang of it. When I went to work for Stream six years ago and did Windows 95 support over the telephone, I knew a good deal about Windows 95 already, and then they put us through four weeks of training to add to our knowledge so that we had a deeper technical understand of the product to use on the phone. Yesterday, I wasn’t even entirely certain what the software we produce did, but I ended up taking calls nonetheless. Pretty scary, really. All of a sudden I was representing the company in a formal capacity without really undersand the extent of what I was supposed to be doing. I’m dealing, though.
For now, as I said, I’m playing around with the software, using it under different circumstances and with different devces and pieces of software. Right now on my desk I have a Casio Cassiopeia E-100 Pocket PC (a device that I’ve literally been interested in purchasing for about six or seven years, if not more), a Palm Tungston E (almost top of the line Palm), and a Dell Axim X5, a near top-of-the line Windows Mobile product. I’ve wanted to play around with these for ages, and this way I don’t have to buy them to play around with them. Good deal.
Though I’ll probably still eventually buy a Windows Mobile device, based on my usage of them in the last day and a half. I’d never really used one except in stores, but I’ve gotten a much better idea of their capabilities, and I have to say, I’m enjoying them more than my Palm m500 I have at home.
I’m not in a permanent position right now by far. I’m at a temporary desk using a temporary computer, but I’ve set it up using the web browser that I prefer to use and some other miscellaneous software that I can’t live without (or so I think), so I’m good to go.
Now, if I can just figure out exactly what I’m supposed to be supporting, I’ll be in good shape. Things look good, though, and I’m enjoying things so far. Talk to you all soon.
