Is winter over already?
January 4, 2004
Well, winter seems to have subsided somewhat here in Portland as the snow is melting slowly, and the weather forcasters who were screaming about another six inches this weekend downgraded it to three inches, then poof, nothing at all. These are the same people, may I remind you, that had no prediction about six inches of snow dropping on Portland a few days ago, once again proving that meteorology is a science better left to determining temperature alone if you want an accuracte prediction. Not that I’m disappointed about no more snow, mind you.
My Dad had to run some errands yesterday, so he swung by my Mom’s house and picked me up, and the two of us went to lunch. I shouldn’t even have to tell you WHERE we went to lunch, only that it was a new place for me. Well, I can now cross the St. John’s McMenamins off my list, though I certainly would like to go there again. Not only is it one of the few McMenamins that have a theater in it, but the interior of the building was fantastic. It’s one of the rare two-story McMenamins, so we went upstairs to try something different. I was pleased to find in one corner a couch, two living room-esque easy chairs, and a table with menus in the middle of all of them, so we sat there. If that place were closer to my house and I knew I could sit in that corner with the nice chairs, I have a feeling I’d be there a lot. Too bad it’s all the way across town.
My Dad had discovered that the Escape’s battery had gone dead that morning, so he called the dealership and asked if he could pick up a new battery and bring back the old one, saving him some time of waiting for them to do it (since it’s still under warranty). They wouldn’t let him, though, so we drove back across town and went to Lake Oswego to pick up the Escape and take it to the dealer. I felt a little strange as we pulled up into the driveway, and when I went inside to get a drink, I realized what it was: I was at his house without my car. It’s probably been YEARS since I’ve been there without my car, so that’s what was triggering the little weird feeling in me. Well, we were eventually headed back over to my Mom’s house, though, so it’s not like I was there for a few days or something.
My Mom didn’t want to trust in the goodness of Mother Nature last night, however, and so she wanted me to pick up her car from her work yesterday so that if the weather turned bad, she could just take the bus back to the bottom of the hill and then walk home without leaving her car at work. If the weather was OK, then I could still come and pick her up. On my way to pick her up, then, I stopped at Blockbuster and used the gift cards she had given me to buy a couple of previously viewed DVDs. They were having a “Buy 2, get 1 free” deal, so I ended up with 28 Days Later, X2: X-Men United, and The Italian Job. I actually hadn’t seen The Itanian Job, but my Mom had rented it recently and said it was good, plus I’d heard some good buzz about it. Frankly, I was really reaching for a third movie to get for free, and nothing else looked particularly interesting. So I gambled a bit. I watched both X2 and
I keep losing track of the days thanks to the strange holiday schedule, but I’m fairly certain that today is Sunday. Another week, more waiting. I did hear back from the job I interviewed with right before Christmas, and it was a negatory, even though I thought I had a good chance. *Sigh* Oh well, I still have the other thing lined up with my hands-on type thing in about a week or so. At least I’ll get a good picture of what I’ll be getting into, no?
So that’s about all I have for now. Hope everyone had a good weekend.
