Well, instead of sending out an email to each of you, I’ll send ONE to ALL of you. Makes my life easier so I can get back to slacking off…er, studying. Tomorrow is the first day of classes, but I only have my FYI course (First Year Initiatives–my freshman course on truth, beauty, and politics) and Calculus. My Calculus text alone was over $100, so the course better be good. Last night I went to a couple of “welcome back” parties, but I ended up hanging out with a bunch of people from my floor until 3:30. I haven’t been to bed before 1 yet since I’ve been here. I’ve really gotten to know some of them, and we do a lot together. They were doing karioke last night for a few hours, but we didn’t get a chance to do anything. Everybody wanted me to do “One Week” by the Barenaked Ladies, but I was afraid I’d run out of breath and pass out or something. I have my choir audition tonight, and today I also interviewed with the ITS department with my roommate, and we were both assured of getting as many hours as they could give us (giving preference to the returning students). We would be going out on calls to computers around campus and working with them, getting them set up, etc. Sounds like fun, even if it’s only 6 hours a week or so. At least I’m not like most of the other people I know doing food service and physical plants (ie, groundskeeping–no dad, I’m not mowing the lawn, and no mom, I’m not emptying the dishwasher!). The classes I’m taking are my FYI course, Economics 150 (designed for students wishing to take more than one Econ course), Calculus, History (the course is called “Age of Democratic Revolution”), and choir. I’m auditioning for the chamber choir, though, and if I get that, I might drop the regular choir. If I took all of those classes (and both choirs), I’d be taking 5 credits, which is way too many. Tuesday and Thursday I only have two classes, but still…I don’t want to be overloaded and not have time for anything else. My dorm still isn’t finished, and we have to deal with construction every morning and unfinished things sitting around. We don’t have a lounge, kitchen, elevator, laundry facilities, or carpeting yet. I’m happy with my dorm, though, because this was the ghetto of the dorms for all the previous years, and it seems pretty plush right now. We don’t even have mirrors in our rooms yet! For those of you concerned with my computer usage, even though we got our Internet connections running, I haven’t been spending much time in front of my laptop. I can play games, but I just haven’t been, and hanging out instead. We discovered that we could hook up a monitor to the back of my laptop and watch movies, so we’ve watched “Evil Dead 2″ and “Army of Darkness” (thank you Dad and Cindy!) so far, and everyone thought they were a big hit. Heather, you’ll like the fact that I made about 3 friends instantly when I started playing my Crystal Method album.
Everyone also comes over to use my laser printer for resumes and such, and I’ve even let some people print out papers if they’re nice to me.
Anyway, that’s what I’ve been doing so far. I’ll probably go to a concert in the school coffee shop tonight for awhile–making sure it isn’t Christian rock this time. Maybe I’ll get some sleep tonight since I have a 9 o’clock class. I’ll talk to you all later!
